Choosing a Grain Vac: Cleanup, Transfer, PTO, and Self-Powered Options

A grain vac's full-bin number does not tell you how it will finish a cleanout. Grain vacs range from compact machines that fit through a doorway to high-capacity transfer vacs built to load trucks from full bins. Pipe length, intake conditions, access, available power, and annual use all change which vac fits the job.

Start by separating cleanup from transfer. A compact vac is easier to place in tight areas and smaller jobs. A transfer vac moves far more grain, but it also brings a larger pipe package, a higher power requirement, and a different ownership decision.

Cleanup vacs and transfer vacs serve different work

Compact cleanup vacs favor access and portability over maximum capacity. The Walinga 3510 family, for example, includes gas, electric, and three-point versions. The compact gas and electric machines are 34 inches wide, and Walinga rates them in hundreds of bushels per hour depending on the power source and crop.

That size fits cleanup, reclamation, pits, and areas where a full-size grain vac will not fit. It is not a lower-capacity substitute for a machine built to load trucks throughout the day.

Full-size transfer vacs are designed for bin loadout and other higher-volume grain movement. Our current choices include the AGI REM VRX and VR12, Brandt 5200EX and 1300HP, and Walinga 7614 and 7816 families. They use larger pipe, require more power, and carry manufacturer ratings in the thousands of bushels per hour.

Most grain-vac jobs fall into one of three groups:

  • compact cleanup and recovery in tight areas;
  • routine bin cleanout and truck loading; or
  • frequent transfer work that supports a dedicated power unit.

Full-bin rate is not cleanout rate

Grain-vac capacity changes with suction distance, pipe and hose arrangement, crop, moisture, lift, and the amount of grain feeding the intake. Full-bin loadout is normally the fastest part of the job. Final cleanout takes longer as the grain gets farther from the vac and more pipe is added.

Two current ratings show why the conditions belong beside the number:

  • AGI rates the REM VR12 at 9,000 to 10,000 bushels per hour with one hose drawing from a full bin. AGI specifies 130 horsepower for the PTO model.
  • Walinga's published 7614 figures use corn, a 12-foot suction line, and a truck-loading kit. Walinga also notes that crop condition, barometric pressure, and humidity can affect capacity.

Use the same five details for every rate being compared:

A capacity number without those conditions is not a dependable estimate of how long the bin will take.

PTO or self-powered: price the tractor time too

A PTO grain vac uses the tractor for power. A self-powered vac carries its own engine and drivetrain. The vac may move grain in much the same way, but the equipment and labor tied to the job are different.

PTO is a practical fit when a properly sized tractor is available whenever the vac will run. Current manufacturer requirements vary widely: Brandt specifies 70 horsepower for the 5200EX, while AGI specifies 85 horsepower for the VRX in full-bin loadout and 130 horsepower for the VR12. The tractor must also match the PTO speed and hydraulic requirements of the exact model.

Dedicated power becomes more useful when the vac moves between sites, runs while tractors are committed elsewhere, or needs to be ready for more than one crew. We offer self-powered AGI REM and Walinga builds with the engine and trailer matched to the vac.

The tradeoff is clear. A self-powered vac frees a tractor, but adds purchase cost and another engine to own. Put tractor hours and scheduling on the same page as the equipment price.

Price the pipe package with the vac

The pipe and hose package determines how far the vac can reach and how closely the quoted capacity matches the work. Record the longest routine suction distance, access around the bin, discharge position, and any second layout the vac will regularly serve.

Extra pipe adds reach, not capacity. The rate normally falls as suction distance and hose resistance increase, so a quote should account for the longest pipe run you expect to use regularly.

Included equipment also varies. Compare rigid pipe, flexible stainless hose, rubber cleanup hose, nozzles, floor-sweep equipment, caddies, and transport storage line by line. A lower machine price may come with a smaller pipe and cleanup package.

Rent or own?

Rental can fit occasional cleanout, planned dates, or a first season with a class of vac. Ownership becomes more attractive when the work returns every year, several sites share the machine, or the timing is too unpredictable to depend on rental availability.

Compare the full cost of each path:

  • expected days or hours of use each year;
  • delivery and return cost for a rental;
  • timing risk if cleanout dates move;
  • tractor and operator time for a PTO vac;
  • storage, insurance, and engine ownership for a self-powered vac; and
  • the value of having the machine ready for an unplanned job.

What to bring to a grain-vac quote

The fastest way to narrow the choices is to describe the longest routine pipe run and the slowest part of the job, not only the full-bin rate.

Bring these details:

  • crop and estimated annual volume;
  • full-bin loadout, final cleanout, pit, pile, or other intake condition;
  • longest suction distance and required lift;
  • truck or receiving position;
  • doorway, bin, or yard access limits;
  • available tractor horsepower, PTO speed, hydraulics, or electrical power;
  • whether a tractor can remain on the vac; and
  • expected dates if rental is being considered.
