How to Choose a No-Till Drill

When customers ask us which no-till drill will fit their operation, the answer usually starts with the seed and the field, not the width. A five-foot drill and a 50-foot drill may both plant cover crops, but they are built for very different residue levels, tractor sizes, field access, and acres per day.

We recommend choosing the opener and seed-box system first, then deciding how much width the tractor and field access can handle. The right drill has to cut through the residue, hold the intended depth, meter every type of seed in the planting plan, and close the slot.

Match the drill to the ground

The amount of residue and soil preparation changes the opener system the drill needs. Prepared ground is easier to penetrate because the soil has already been loosened and much of the surface residue has been worked. Firm untilled soil and standing residue require a drill that can cut the surface, open a consistent furrow, place the seed, and close that furrow without depending on prior tillage.

PH Outdoors separates those jobs into two drill families. The G-Series is its true no-till line. Tempered cutting discs are spaced 7.5 inches apart, the seed is placed into the slit, and solid rubber packing wheels follow the discs to close the soil around the seed. The M-Series uses double-disc openers and is designed as a minimum-till drill for food plots, prepared seedbeds, and other lighter conditions. Both are useful choices, but they are intended for different levels of ground penetration and residue.

Tar River describes the SAYA line as light-duty no-till equipment that can also work in prepared seeding conditions. The SAYA507 uses front coulters ahead of spring-loaded double-disc openers, with a full-width cage roller behind the openers. Its separate seed and fertilizer boxes make it a practical option for pasture, food-plot, and cover-crop work when seed and fertilizer need to be applied in the same pass.

Haybuster describes the 77C, 107C, and 147C as all-purpose pull-type drills for pasture renovation, reclamation, food plots, conventional tillage, minimum tillage, and no-till. All three use a lead coulter ahead of an offset double-disc opener, adjustable down pressure, parallel linkage, and a steel press wheel. This gives buyers a pull-type choice in 7-, 10.5-, and 14-foot working widths without moving into a large folding drill.

For larger farms, CrustBuster offers production-scale no-till equipment. The All Plant opener uses an offset leading blade for penetration and residue flow, while parallel linkage keeps the opener relationship consistent as it follows the field. CrustBuster offers five down-pressure settings from 125 to 500 pounds per opener and models from 10 to 50 feet, including wider folding drills.

For smaller acreage where the seedbed will be prepared or only lightly worked, the PH Outdoors M-Series or Tar River SAYA models may be all the drill the job needs. If the drill needs to work through firm ground and standing residue, the PH Outdoors G-Series provides a compact mounted no-till arrangement. Haybuster fits well when the operation needs a pull-type drill, multiple independently metered products, and 7 to 14 feet of working width. Compare opener systems

A no-till drill performs several jobs in a short distance. A cutting disc or coulter opens a path through residue and firm soil. The opener forms the furrow, the meter delivers the seed, and a packing or press wheel firms the soil around it. The drill must perform all of those jobs while moving across changing residue, moisture, and field contours.

In heavy residue, a dull or poorly adjusted cutting element can push residue into the seed slot instead of cutting it cleanly. This is commonly called hairpinning. The residue can interfere with seed placement and seed-to-soil contact, especially when it is damp and difficult to cut.

Down pressure also has to fit the ground. Too little pressure can let the opener ride up and place seed too shallow. More pressure can help in firm, dry soil, but it is not a universal answer. In wet ground, excessive pressure can smear the sidewall or compact the seed zone. The useful setting is the one that holds the intended depth and closes the slot in the conditions being planted that day.

The different drill families handle these jobs in different ways. PH Outdoors G-Series drills use individual tempered cutting elements followed by solid packing wheels. Tar River SAYA drills use a front coulter, double-disc opener, and cage roller. Haybuster uses a lead coulter set 1.5 inches ahead of an offset double-disc opener, with adjustable spring pressure, parallel linkage, and a steel press wheel on each row. CrustBuster combines offset blades, parallel-linkage openers, adjustable down pressure, and press wheels. When comparing them, ask what cuts the residue, what forms the furrow, what controls depth, and what firms the soil around the seed.

After the first part of a field, stop and inspect several rows. Dig for the seed, measure the actual depth, look for residue in the slot, and make sure the furrow is closing. A setting that worked in a prepared area may need to change when the drill reaches firmer soil, heavier residue, or wetter ground.

Choose the seed boxes

Seed-box equipment can separate two drills that otherwise look very similar. Wheat, soybeans, clover, brassicas, native warm-season grasses, and fertilizer do not all flow or meter the same way.

A standard seed box handles many medium and larger seeds. Very small seed is often planted at a lower rate and shallower depth, which is why a separate small-seed box can be useful. Fluffy native-grass seed needs more than a smaller opening. The awns and light material can bridge above a normal meter, so native-grass boxes use agitation and a metering system designed to keep that seed moving.

PH Outdoors says the main G-Series box can handle a wide range of seed sizes. It also offers a small-seed box for low rates and shallow placement, plus a native-seed box with an auger-style agitator for fluffy seed. Those are optional pieces of equipment, so the exact box package needs to be included in the quote rather than assumed from the drill model.

The Tar River SAYA507 has separate stainless steel boxes and meters for conventional seed and fertilizer. The Tar River SAYA907 adds a third compartment and dedicated native-grass metering. The SAYA507 makes sense when conventional seed and fertilizer are the main materials. If fluffy native grass is also part of the planting plan, the SAYA907 gives that seed its own box and metering system.

Haybuster equips the 77C, 107C, and 147C with two boxes and individual metering. They can plant two different seeds, or seed and dry fertilizer, at separate rates. An optional front legume box adds a third independently metered product. When fluffy native grass is part of the plan, Haybuster also offers a native-grass attachment with dual agitators, larger seed hoses, and seed boots to help keep that material moving. The legume box and native-grass equipment solve different metering problems, so the quote should identify the exact combination rather than treating them as interchangeable options.

CrustBuster uses its adjustable Wobble Slot seed meter across the All Plant line. CrustBuster describes it as an all-metal seed cup that can be adjusted for different seed sizes, weights, and rates, including crops such as wheat, soybeans, sorghum, alfalfa, and cover-crop mixtures. Fertilizer equipment and the seed-drive system vary by drill and configuration, so those details belong on the quote with the exact model.

Before choosing the boxes, decide which seeds will be planted separately, which will be blended, and which materials need to be carried at the same time. Also confirm where each box drops its seed. A small seed that needs shallow placement may need to enter the soil at a different point than the seed coming from the main box.

Choose the working width

Working width determines how many passes the drill needs, but it also determines where the drill can go. Gates, terraces, wooded trails, roads, storage doors, turning room, and the tractor all belong in the width decision.

The PH Outdoors G-Series covers a useful range for food plots, conservation planting, and smaller farms. The G3 has five cutting elements across a 38-inch working width. The G5 has eight across 60 inches. The G8 uses 13 across 97.5 inches, and the G10 uses 16 across a 10-foot working width.

The tractor requirements change quickly across that lineup. PH Outdoors says the G3 can be lifted by a tractor with 1,600 pounds of three-point capacity or used with a wheel kit behind an 800cc-or-larger UTV. At the other end, PH Outdoors specifies at least 120 engine horsepower and 5,500 pounds of lift capacity when the G10 is loaded. Wheel and tow arrangements are available on applicable G-Series models when carrying the drill fully mounted is not the best fit.

The Tar River SAYA507 and SAYA907 are compact three-point drills. Tar River lists a 35-horsepower minimum, Category I and II hitch compatibility, and published weights of approximately 1,420 pounds for the SAYA507 and 1,499 pounds for the SAYA907. That gives us a useful starting point, but horsepower alone does not show whether the tractor has enough three-point lift, front ballast, and operating weight to handle the drill once the boxes are filled.

For buyers who want a pull-type drill between the compact mounted models and larger folding machines, Haybuster offers three rigid widths. The 77C plants 7 feet with 12 openers, weighs 3,600 pounds empty, and carries a published 35-horsepower minimum. The 107C plants 10.5 feet with 18 openers, weighs 4,200 pounds, and carries a 50-horsepower minimum. The 147C plants 14 feet with 24 openers, weighs 5,650 pounds, and carries a 70-horsepower minimum. Haybuster qualifies each horsepower figure by terrain and soil conditions. Because these drills do not fold narrower for transport, the narrowest gate, road, and storage opening should be measured before choosing the width.

CrustBuster All Plant drills cover a much larger acreage range. The CrustBuster 4025 is a 25-foot folding drill. In the linked 10-inch-spacing configuration, CrustBuster lists 30 openers, a 9,810-pound drill weight, and a 130-horsepower minimum. The CrustBuster 4750 covers 50 feet and folds to a published transport width of 16 feet 8 inches. At that scale, field entrances, road width, hydraulics, tongue weight, and transport planning can be just as important as acres per hour.

To estimate how many acres different widths may cover in an hour, use this planning calculation:

Estimated acres per hour = working width in feet × field speed in mph × field efficiency ÷ 8.25

At an assumed 5 mph and 75 percent field efficiency, a five-foot drill covers about 2.3 acres per hour, a seven-foot drill about 3.2, a 10.5-foot drill about 4.8, a 14-foot drill about 6.4, a 25-foot drill about 11.4, and a 50-foot drill about 22.7. These are planning examples, not manufacturer ratings. Turning, filling, slopes, residue, field shape, and the speed needed to maintain depth can all reduce the actual rate.

Compare row spacing

Row spacing affects crop placement, opener count, drill weight, residue flow, and the number of seed meters that must be calibrated. Narrower spacing is not automatically better, and wider spacing is not automatically worse. The crop, seeding rate, weed-management plan, residue, moisture, and local agronomic recommendation should control the choice.

PH Outdoors G-Series drills use 7.5-inch spacing, and the compact Tar River drills use ten rows on 7.5-inch spacing. Haybuster uses 7-inch spacing across the 77C, 107C, and 147C. CrustBuster offers several All Plant widths with 7.5-, 8-, or 10-inch spacing, depending on the model.

The 25-foot CrustBuster provides a useful example of what spacing changes on the same width. CrustBuster lists 40 openers and a 10,960-pound drill weight at 7.5-inch spacing. At 10-inch spacing, it uses 30 openers and weighs 9,810 pounds. Both versions carry the same published 130-horsepower minimum, but the narrower spacing adds ten opener assemblies and 1,150 pounds to the drill.

The difference becomes larger on the 50-foot 4750. CrustBuster lists 80 openers and a 35,815-pound weight at 7.5-inch spacing, compared with 60 openers and 32,215 pounds at 10-inch spacing. Both configurations have the same published 178.2-bushel box capacity and 16-foot-8-inch transport width. The crop plan should decide which spacing fits. After that, compare the exact opener count, drill weight, maintenance needs, and tractor requirements rather than relying on the model name alone.

Tractor requirements

Empty drill weight is only the beginning of the tractor check. Seed, fertilizer, optional weights, native-grass equipment, and other accessories all add load. A tractor that can lift the empty drill may not comfortably lift or control it when every box is full.

For a mounted drill, confirm the hitch category and three-point lift capacity at the distance where the drill's weight will actually sit. Also check tractor operating weight, front ballast, tire capacity, hydraulics, and clearance between the tractor and drill. Engine horsepower and lift capacity are separate requirements.

For a pull-type drill or wheel-kit arrangement, confirm the hitch, tongue weight, hydraulic flow and remote outlets, transport width, road lighting, tire capacity, and how the tractor will control the loaded drill on slopes. Even when a compact drill and wheel kit are approved for UTV use, the terrain, braking, traction, and weight of the drill with seed and accessories still need to be checked carefully.

Haybuster makes the loaded-weight check explicit for the C-Series: the tractor should weigh at least as much as the drill with its seed containers full. We look at that requirement beside the 35-, 50-, or 70-horsepower minimum because a tractor can have enough engine power and still be too light to control the filled drill safely on the intended terrain.

For wider folding drills, include road and field access in the quote. Record the narrowest gate and bridge, overhead clearance, road width, field entrance, storage opening, and whether the tractor has the hydraulic capacity to fold and operate the exact drill.

Calibrate the drill

A rate chart gives the operator a starting point. It does not prove the final pounds per acre because seed size, coating, density, moisture, and blend can change how the meter feeds. A different seed lot can be enough to require another check.

We recommend calibrating with the actual seed, the intended box, and the drive engaged the way it will be in the field. Collect seed from individual rows, weigh it, adjust the meter, and repeat the test. Comparing rows also helps identify a blocked tube, worn meter, drive problem, or setting that is not consistent across the drill.

University of Georgia Extension provides a useful check for drills on 7.5-inch spacing. Travel 154 feet, collect the seed from one row, and weigh it in grams. Under that method, the grams collected from the row equal the approximate pounds per acre. If the target is 30 pounds per acre, that row should deliver about 30 grams over the calibration distance. UGA also recommends checking that the rows remain within about 10 percent of the target.

Use the manufacturer's procedure when it differs, and recalibrate when the seed, coating, blend, box, row spacing, or meter changes. After planting begins, dig seed in several rows to confirm that the measured rate is also being placed at the intended depth.

What to bring to a quote

Send us:

  • Every seed species or blend, its target depth, and the recommended seeding rate.
  • Whether seed, fertilizer, small seed, or native grass must be carried at the same time.
  • The heaviest residue, firmest soil, wettest area, slopes, terraces, and stones the drill will encounter.
  • Total acres, field size, and the time available to finish planting.
  • Preferred row spacing and any crop-specific agronomic requirements.
  • Tractor or carrier make, model, year, hitch, three-point lift capacity, ballast, hydraulics, and available remotes.
  • The narrowest gate, bridge, road, trail, and storage opening the drill must pass through.
  • Whether the drill will be mounted, carried on a wheel kit, or pulled between fields.
