Tractor, mini-skid-steer, skid-steer, compact-track-loader, and excavator drum mulchers have different power and mounting requirements. Tractor heads use PTO power and three-point hitches, while hydraulic heads have carrier-specific hydraulic flow, pressure, plumbing, and mounting requirements. Applications vary by carrier and exact head. These model families cover land clearing, forestry maintenance, trail and fence-line vegetation management, roadside and railway maintenance, and vegetation work along canals and riverbanks.
Drum Mulchers by Carrier
Tractors: Tractor mulchers must match the tractor's PTO horsepower, PTO speed, hitch class, lift capacity, and attachment-weight limits. The Baumalight MP330 tractor brush mulcher has a 30-inch rotor, 41.75-inch path width, 15 minimum engine horsepower, and 35 maximum PTO horsepower.
Mini skid steers: The Baumalight MS530M uses a standard mini-skid-steer mount, has a 42-inch path and 30-inch rotor, and requires a minimum 2,000-pound carrier weight. Its mini-skid-steer mount is distinct from a universal skid-steer mount.
Skid steers and compact track loaders: Skid steer mulchers must match the model's flow and pressure range to the carrier's auxiliary circuit, along with attachment weight, lift, cooling, controls, return plumbing, and mount. FAE offers BL4/SSL 150, BL4/SSL 175, and BL4/SSL 200 working-width versions for 90- to 135-horsepower skid steers. The Fecon BH74SS Bull Hog mulcher has a 61-inch working width and weighs 2,790 pounds.
Excavators: Excavator mulchers must be matched to carrier operating weight, auxiliary flow and pressure, attachment weight, mount, return plumbing, and case-drain requirements. The FAE BL0/EX 75 excavator mulcher family has a 2-to-5-ton carrier range, an 8-to-24-gpm flow range, and a 3-inch maximum shredding diameter. The FAE BL1/EX/VT 75 excavator mulcher has a 5-to-7.5-ton carrier range, a 17-to-37-gpm flow range, a 31-inch working width, a required case drain, and hoses that are not supplied.
The Fecon FMX28 excavator mulcher has a 28-inch working width, weighs 750 pounds, has a 12-to-40-gpm flow range, and suits a 3.5-to-8-ton carrier range. The Loftness 31BX20 Battle Ax excavator mulcher has a 31-inch cutting width and a recommended 10,000-to-15,000-pound excavator range at 15 to 35.9 gpm.
Hydraulic Plumbing and Motor Selection
Flow alone does not establish compatibility. Carrier class or weight, flow, pressure, hydraulic power, attachment weight, lift, cooling, controls, return plumbing, mount, and width must match the exact model. Standard-flow and high-flow labels do not replace the model's specified flow and pressure range.
Case-drain, hose, and coupler requirements also vary by model and motor. The BL1/EX/VT requires a case drain and does not include hoses, while Baumalight MX couplers are ordered separately and case-drain requirements vary by model and motor.
Rotor and Tooth Systems
Baumalight MP330 and MP348 models use high-speed teeth, while MP560 and MP572 models use carbide-tipped bolt-in teeth. Loftness offers 4-point beaver, reversible planer, and double-carbide teeth on the 20 Series. FAE BL0/EX, BL1/EX, and BL4/SSL families use Bite Limiter rotors.
FAE rates the BL0/EX for a 3-inch maximum shredding diameter and the UML/SSL for an 8-inch maximum.
Alternative Cutting Systems
The Fecon DH60 Disc Hawk uses a disc-style cutting head instead of a drum. Brush cutters use rotary decks rather than drum rotors, while forestry equipment covers additional land-clearing machines.
